Puerto Vallarta: A Golf Haven

Table of Contents

Puerto Vallarta stands out as one of the most important golf regions in Mexico and as the game gains popularity around the nation, more and more visitors are taking to the city for a challenging round of golf. From Marina Vallarta to Riviera Nayarit, the various courses strewn throughout the region offer stunning vistas, challenging fairways and a level well suited for every type of player. While you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the game, Vallarta does have a knack for providing amazing golf experiences that can turn any individual into an avid golfer.

Flamingos Golf, the very first course to be built in the area, has a challenging front and back nine located just north of Nuevo Vallarta. Offering golfers the chance to tee off on a par 72 championship course, Flamingos stretches over 6,853 yards long and has slightly narrow fairways, gently sloping terrain and 18 holes of pure bliss. Upping the difficulty are 9 water hazards, 43 bunkers and a cool breeze that challenges even the most seasoned of golfers.  This course and others in the area provide transportation to and from most hotels, making it an ideal location for those wishing to golf in Puerto Vallarta.

Furthering the popularity of golf in the region is Vista Vallarta, a two course complex situated overlooking beautiful Banderas Bay. The Nicklaus course, the more challenging of the two, was used in 2002 for the PGA World Cup Tournament, just one year after its opening. On this course, the sweeping vistas, framed with stunning views of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range and Banderas Bay, offer golfers a unique experience surrounded by unparalleled beauty. The Nicklaus course is situated on the highest part of the property, providing golfers with a challenging 7,057-yard, par-72 course.

Complimenting, yet contrasting its counterpart is the Weiskopf golf course, which shares the same facilities but provides a very different experience. Aside from the dense vegetation and deep ravines, the golf course makes use of diverse elevations and assorted bunkers to create a totally different challenge. Both the Nicklaus and Weisskopf courses fall in the Top 10 Courses in Mexico according to Golf Digest’s Planet Golf Ranking. For those who dream of golfing where the pros once did, Vista Vallarta is the supreme location.

There are two more courses in Puerto Vallarta that are worth the visit. El Tigre and Marina Golf, closer to downtown Vallarta, both of which have golfers flocking to the region with their clubs in hand. Each location offers a tropical style course with fearsome beach bunkers and world-class facilities.
