Why Traveling without Children Can be Great for your Marriage

Table of Contents

Marriage is no picnic; anyone who’s been in a long-term relationship will tell you that it takes work, but the work required is tripled when you have kids. It’s so easy to disappear into being “mom” or “dad”, and forget that you are also a spouse, a friend, a lover to your other half. Experts claim that taking some time to travel alone is one of the best ways to shake the cobwebs from your relationship and keep the spark alive (or rekindle it). Here are some of the best reasons we can think of to travel alone with your spouse, or at least find some time to be alone when you are on vacation as a family:

Follow your bliss

Follow your bliss

When you make the commitment to spend some time alone together, whether it be for a weekend, a date night, or even just a day, you can finally begin to work out what it is that makes you happy now. Your own happiness, and the happiness in your relationship should be a priority because it’s the best way to show your children what they should aim for in their own relationships in later life. Taking a vacation alone together will let you and your spouse figure out what it is that works in your relationship, and give you time to work on what does not.

Prioritize fun

When you become parents the definition of “fun” often changes to encompass a plethora of child-friendly things, but don’t let the list dwindle until it’s made up of only things for your children’s entertainment. When you vacation together you can make sure that you remember what “fun” is for you and your spouse, and you might even get to add to it. It doesn’t really matter if you do something simple that you know you both love, or go on an adventure when you’re on vacation… all that matter is that you do it together and enjoy yourselves.

Time and space to focus on your other half is the perfect opportunity to rediscover what it is that you love about each other. You may even fall in love with them all over again, if you give yourself the chance you might even find new things to love about them as you discover the person they have become since becoming a parent.

Sleep!

How will sleeping when on vacation improve my relationship, we hear you ask? Well, do you remember what it was like to share a bed before your kids, and probably their toys, and the dogs clambered in? Sleeping next to someone and hugging them in the night is one of the most intimate things we can do, but it’s something parents are often deprived of. Plus, the emotional and physical exhaustion that lack of sleep brings is very bad for your love life… so, yes, nap together and get to a place where you’re well-rested and excited to hang out together.

Get close and intimate

Get close and intimate

If you’re lucky enough to get a long vacation away together you should use the time to inject intimacy back into your everyday interactions. Touch each other: hug, kiss, hold hands, play with each others’ hair, and sit close together. Be affectionate to rebuild your relationship, but carry it on when you get home to maintain it. We need to feel loved as human beings, and often just saying “I love you” is not enough. Such small actions can really take the sting out of a bad day, too.
