The History of Christmas Trees

Table of Contents

Not only a Christmas tradition, evergreen trees have been used in homes and communities for thousands of years to celebrate winter and honor the passing of the seasons. It is unclear when and how the first Christmas tree first came into place but many historians have traced the Christmas tree’s roots back as far as before the advent of Christianity, when people would use trees and green plants in their homes to remind them that hope is on the horizon with the coming of spring.

Paradise Trees

It would seem that the first incarnation of the Christmas tree was called a “Paradise Tree” to honor the Garden of Eden. It would be decorated with apples and colorful fruits to remind people of the great fall in the Bible and the abundance of paradise. People who couldn’t afford a tree would just build their own out of wood, decorating it with apples, candles, and paper. Over the years, decorations became more and more extravagant.

A German Tradition

In the traditional sense of the custom, it was in fact the Germans who started the Christmas Tree tradition as we know it today, starting in the 16th century. The Germans would bring a tree into their homes and decorate it with candles that illuminated and twinkled. Queen Victoria of Great Britain, married to a German, Prince Albert, saw just how beautiful Christmas trees were, and she started the tradition with her own family. News of the royal family posed before their decorated Christmas tree along with their children soon spread across Britain and further afield to America and Canada and it seemed that everyone want to to be just like the royal family. Soon, many people started decorating their homes with a Christmas tree.
