Is it Safe to Vacation in Mexico?

Table of Contents

Everyone knows that the media is notorious for drawing attention to whatever sensational stories they come across, which are often unflattering or downright scary, especially when it comes to the diverse and beautiful country of Mexico.

If you haven’t heard of kidnappings and drug cartel violence, you must live under a rock, because these stories make the headlines. However, there are also countless gorgeous destinations throughout the country that are safe, drawing tourists from all over the world, boasting everything from five-star resorts and world class dining to outdoor adventure and breathtaking secluded beaches.

Mexico is an amazing country to visit

So, how do you know if it is actually safe to vacation in Mexico where you can experience the trip of a lifetime?  Here are some guidelines to help you make the right choices as you explore all of the wonderful things Mexico has to offer:

Use Common Sense!

Above all else when traveling, using common sense should be your foremost command.  As a general rule, if you aren’t out doing questionable things, like looking for and buying drugs, and you don’t involve yourself with questionable people, you will be just fine.  Mexico is a fun and exciting place and it’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of a wild night out, so make sure you are traveling with someone who will steer you in the right direction should you have a few too many tequila shots.

Random acts of violence are quite rare in most parts of Mexico, especially when compared to many cities and regions in countries like the United States, and staying away from any “undesirables” will further your chances of staying safe.

Stick Together

Although there are plenty of adventurous travelers out there who enjoy exploring foreign places on their own, from a safety standpoint, there is always strength in numbers.  Knowing that you are traveling with friends or family members who can collectively keep an eye out for trouble will put everyone with you at ease.

If you or your travel companions plan to have some drinks, ask for someone to volunteer to stay sober so they can take care of anyone who overindulges.  Likewise, if you are planning a night out on the town, make a pact with everyone you go with to leave together when the night is over.

Understand You Aren’t Above the Law

This is an important point to remember no matter where you are traveling but especially true in foreign countries.  Just because you are a tourist does not mean that you will get away with breaking the law.  Knowing that the same rules and laws apply to everyone is always a good thing to keep in mind.

Mexico is an amazing country to visit and it is safe to vacation here as long as you are smart about it!
