At the very tip of Baja California Sur you find the sparkling and well-loved Los Cabos – this dual destination has long been a vacation hotspot. Wonder why it’s called a dual destination? Well this has a lot to do with the region’s two different personas! San Jose del Cabo is serene, traditional and quaint. Retaining the look of an “authentic” Mexican town San Jose has wonderful cobbled streets, intimate restaurants and cute little boutiques, all radiating from the mission church and main square. Cabo San Lucas, however, is vibrant, lively and full of funky bars, not to mention the sophisticated Luxury Avenue Mall which is centred on the Marina.
Los Cabos and Land’s End
North Americans will often call Los Cabos ‘Lands End’ as it can be found on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula which is to the south of California. Los Cabos has been hugely influenced by North America thanks, in part, to its close proximity; shopping malls and real estate in particular follow the North American trends quite closely. The setting, however, with the desert meeting the mountains and stunning Sea of Cortez, is all Los Cabos.
The stretch of shoreline which makes up Los Cabos can be divided into three distinct areas. Firstly, there is San José del Cabo, secondly, Cabo San Lucas and finally the 33-km (20-mile) Corridor which connects them.
San Jose del Cabo
San Jose del Cabo is positively sleepy, with a shady main plaza, narrow and quintessentially Mexican streets, colonial buildings and a big focus on culture. You should really slow your pace here, wandering in and out of the little art galleries and boutiques all day is such fun, and when you’re ready to cool down you can grab a Hibiscus flavoured popsicle to refresh yourself. The evening is heavenly, too, when you sit at an al fresco restaurant and sip cool Margaritas.
Cabo San Lucas
A short hop along the Corridor will take you to one of Mexico’s most luxurious, impressive and glitzy towns. Here there are glamorous resorts, high end Spas and championship standard Golf courses. On the beaches you’ll find watersports, bars and an all-round good time. This is the epicentre of party and play in Baja California.
