Los Cabos Travel Tips During COVID

Table of Contents

In light of the new restrictions that international travelers are facing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to share some Los Cabos Travel Tips during COVID to help you navigate the current requirements.

As of November 2021, the land border between Mexico and the United States is open for both essential and non-essential travelers. Non-essential travelers must show proof that they have been fully vaccinated in order to enter the United States. In January, the rules will change so that both essential and non-essential travelers must show proof of vaccination to enter the United States.

Travelers entering the United States by air must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their planes. Airline agents at Los Cabos International Airport have been instructed to refuse boarding to anyone who can’t show proof of a negative test or proof of recovery from COVID-19.

The state of Baja California Sur is currently labeled yellow in Mexico’s stoplight system, the system that measures levels of contagion and indicates corresponding regulations state by state. In addition to essential activity functioning normally, hotels and restaurants in Baja California Sur are currently allowed to operate at 75% capacity.

COVID-19 Traveling Tips

Read on for our Los Cabos travel tips during COVID.

Get Tested Within 24 Hours of Flying

Anyone over the age of two flying to the United States will need to get a COVID-19 viral test within 24 hours of flying and show their negative test result to the airline before boarding (regardless of vaccination status) along with an attestation that can be downloaded here.

For travelers who have recently recovered from COVID-19, they are not required to take the test and instead may travel with documentation of recovery from COVID-19. The documentation of recovery includes a positive COVID-19 viral test result taken within the last 3 months and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider stating clearance to travel.

For international travelers planning to visit Canada, pre-entry testing is required for all travelers 5 years of age or older. Travelers must provide proof of a negative molecular test result taken within 72 hours of a scheduled flight departure OR proof of a previous positive test result taken no more than 180 days ago. They must also enter their travel information, upload proof of vaccination, and outline a quarantine plan in the event of a positive test result using the ArriveCAN app.

Hospitals, laboratories and healthcare clinics throughout the destination are providing both antigen and PCR testing, as well documentation required to travel, provided in electronic or printed format. In addition, all hotels and timeshares throughout Los Cabos offer on-site testing.

Resorts Offer On-Site COVID Testing

Guests staying at Garza Blanca Los Cabos will have access to on-site COVID-19 testing at the resort, administered by a third-party health care professional.

Both the PCR test and the antigen test are available, and both are done by swabbing. Blood tests are not given at the resort.

The antigen test is a rapid test that is accepted by the United States. This test is offered on-site at Garza Blanca Los Cabos, and you are guaranteed to receive your results before you check-out. The PCR test is also available at a discounted rate.

Guests will be provided with electronic and/or printed documentation affirming the negative result.

In the case that any guest tests positive while visiting the resort, they will be able to extend their stay for their quarantine period at the best available rate (subject to availability). Guests will be required to pay for any incidentals while quarantined in their luxury suite.

Driving to Mexico

As of November 2021, you can now drive across the border for your fix of Mexican sunshine

If you plan a future road trip down the coast, you can hit several surfing destinations along the 1,000 miles of Federal Highway 1 down the Baja California peninsula. Driving time from San Diego to Los Cabos is approximately 22 hours, so plan a couple of days for a leisurely road trip.

Take Advantage of COVID Safe Activities in Los Cabos

Many excursions have adapted to be COVID safe. Tours may be running at limited capacity or activities may have shifted to outdoor settings. Many tours are accommodating only people traveling together in the same group, so you and your group can have the tour all to yourselves.

Enjoy Outdoor Activities at your Resort

Resort activities have also adapted to be COVID-safe. For example, exercise and wellness activities such as yoga or fitness classes are being held outdoors. Garza Blanca Los Cabos offers a complimentary electric beach bicycle tour. Resort spas are offering outdoor massages in the natural surroundings of the resort.

Check Out San Jose del Cabo

This smaller, more traditional, more artsy town just down the highway from Cabo San Lucas has a totally different vibe. The best time to head there is on Thursday evening for the Art Walk, which is held weekly from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm during the months from November through June. The area is full of galleries, quaint shops, and many fine restaurants offering a selection of beverages, great cuisine, and live music.

Be Flexible and Roll with the Changes

Even though navigating the constantly changing regulations can be a challenge, traveling to Mexico is still popular for Americans and Canadians. In the fall, several U.S. airlines added flights to Mexico at a time when routes elsewhere were being cut. Official travel data shows that approximately 500,000 Americans flew to Mexico in November 2020, and we are expecting 2022’s high season to be quite busy.

In a typical year, Los Cabos receives about 3 million tourists, 90 percent of whom are from the United States. Up to 70 percent of tourists visiting Los Cabos are repeat guests, and 20 percent visit four times per year, or more!

Tourism is the largest industry in Los Cabos, and it makes up 80 percent of the local economy, so the city is doing everything in its power to ensure that travelers can visit the destination safely.
