Is it safe to Travel to Cabo San Lucas?

The Los Cabos Tourism Board states that Cabo San Lucas is safer to travel than ever before, as the public and private sector have invested money into upgrading the security infrastructure, equipment, and personnel. They have intensified and unified their efforts to ensure safety throughout Los Cabos.

Even with a new safety infrastructure in place, like all major cities worldwide, it’s best not to wander too far on your own or late at night. Try to stay within the designated tourist area, downtown Cabo or the marina area, and your hotel resort grounds to avoid any potential problems. Also, ensure that you go on excursions with a legitimate tour guide company.

The difference between Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos

Cabo, Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas… there are various names being used when referring to this Mexican municipality. The name ‘Los Cabos’ directly translates in English to ‘The Ends’, which is referring to the two towns that make up the municipality that is Los Cabos. These two towns are Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Cabo San Lucas is often shortened to ‘Cabo’ and San Jose del Cabo is usually shortened to ‘San Jose’.

San Jose a 30-minute drive along the picturesque coastline from Cabo. The romantic town of San Jose offers a different experience to the vibrant town of Cabo. it boasts colonial history and offers nostalgia, a step back in time to an older-Mexico, with enchanting cobblestone streets decorated by flags, flowers, and charming buildings. San Jose is home to numerous art galleries, museums, and authentic Mexican restaurants serving delicious cuisines, such as Pozole and Enchiladas.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos is located in between the two towns, sitting like a gem along the oceanfront. Each town is easily accessible, with Cabo being an 18-minute drive and San Jose being a 21-minute drive from the resort.

The weather and climate

Los Arcos in Los Cabos Mexico

Cabo San Lucas has two main seasons – winter and summer. The climate of Cabo is very dry and doesn’t harbor much humidity. This is because the city is surrounded by desert mountains as opposed to the tropics, unlike other parts of Mexico. Wind from the United States also helps and blows through keeping the humidity at bay.

During the winter (November through to April) it’s pleasantly warm during the day, with temperatures reaching 27°C and above. The evenings are usually cooler as the winter air from the United States blows through, with temperatures dropping to 14°C. It’s rare to experience precipitation during the winter period, with it raining only 1 day on average.

The summer period begins in May and lasts until October. The daytime temperature can reach 35°C and the night time being around 18°C. There is also a ‘rainy season’ during the summer, which usually happens between months August – September. During the rainy season, there is more humidity than usual.

Currency

The Mexican Peso is the most commonly used currency throughout Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos, although the U.S dollar is still widely accepted in many establishments. Numerous banks offer currency exchange during business hours. Major credit cards are accepted in most places.

Entry requirements for Mexico

There are a few entry requirements that any foreigner entering Mexico will have to comply with. Firstly, one must have a valid passport at the time of entry, which also has blank passport pages (for stamping purposes). The currency restriction for entry is USD $10,000 and the currency restriction for exit is also USD $10,000.

A tourist visa will be required at entry if a person is visiting for 180 days or less. This is handed out by flight attendants and can be filled out on the plane while flying to your destination. If you have a valid multiple-entry US visa, you can use it to enter Mexico for up to 180 days without a Mexican Visitor Visa, as long as your US visa is valid during your stay and you do not work while in Mexico.
