Mexico Ranks in Top 10 for International Tourism

Table of Contents

According to statistics gathered by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2016, Mexico is rated as the 8th most sought-after destination for international vacationers around the world.  Reported three times each year, the World Tourism rankings reflect how countries stack up against one another in regards to how many international visitors they receive, plus the amount of revenue that their inbound and outbound tourism produces.  Mexico ranked number 8 this year, surpassing other desirable beach destinations including the Dominican Republic, Greece, Portugal, Thailand and Turkey.

Why Mexico is so Beloved by International TouristsWhy Mexico is so Beloved by International Tourists

The Mexican newspaper El Universal published an article that reports that part of the rise in Mexico’s tourism numbers in recent years can be attributed to the attractive exchange rates that tourists from the United States, Europe and Canada currently enjoy.  According to the article that was published in July of this year, numbers of tourists who visit Mexico from the USA have dramatically increased over the past 5 years, with numbers leaping from 5.9 million tourists in 2012 up to 9.6 million in 2016, referencing statistics provided by the Bank of Mexico.

Regardless of the recent draw to Mexico thanks to its enticing exchange rates, the charming country has actually been a preferred destination for international jetsetters for decades.  Mexico has a lot to offer including scrumptious cuisine, warm hospitality, rich cultural traditions, inviting weather all year round in popular beach resort towns, quick and affordable travel from North America, and more inexpensive flights from Europe than ever before.

Safety in Mexico

Even though unfavorable news stories about Mexico crop up from time to time (which are often linked to towns that border the USA and are known to be unsafe), the fear of traveling within the country as a whole is unfounded.  Tourist destinations like Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya and Cancun have proven themselves to be safer than the majority of cities in the USA and Europe.  The likelihood of law-abiding tourists in Mexico having any safety issues is extremely low; with that being said, it is still important to remain alert and aware of your surroundings just as you would anywhere else in the world.
