Do you feel like a lucky person? Or do you class yourself as unlucky? There may be people in your life who always seem to be on a lucky streak, while you constantly feel like you are on the receiving end of bad fortune. Many argue that luck is a product of hard work, a good mindset and a positive perspective on the events that occur in your life, while others believe that people are born more naturally lucky than others and it’s something that’s dictated by a higher power. But what does it mean to be lucky? Is luck a real thing or is it a product of superstition?
What is Luck?
Luck is defined by the English dictionary as “the good things that happen to you, that do not come from your own abilities or effort”. This suggests that luck is something supernatural and a given birthright, dictated by fate and natural occurrences, however, luck is also argued to be something that occurs when you take action in your life. For example, Buddhists believe that we are in control of our ultimate fates by taking conscious control of our behavior. By doing this, we pave new pathways that lead to opportunities and experiences in life, making us feel and seem ‘lucky, when in fact it’s the positive result of stepping out of our comfort zone and taking risks.
Are you Lucky?
Do you feel that you are lucky or unlucky? It is said that being ‘lucky’ depends on your subjective outlook on life and the events that occur. You can feel lucky by focusing on and appreciating the aspects of your life that bring you happiness and joy, such as family or the place that you live. Some people believe that having children, being healthy and having food to eat makes you a lucky person. Others will class having a high-paid job, living in a mansion and sporting a Rolex makes you lucky. It depends on your outlook. As humans, we naturally want more, whether it be money, vacations or materialistic things. It’s natural to have a higher desire and to even be jealous when someone else comes into good fortune. However, it’s argued that this is the reason why people deem themselves as ‘unlucky’, as they focus on what they don’t have instead of what they do have. Appreciation is the key to feeling like a lucky person.
How Can you Attract More Luck?
There are a few steps that you can follow to maximize your chances of receiving luck and good fortune:
1) Broaden your Opportunities
Taking risks puts you outside of your comfort zone and leads to new opportunities and chances. Be open-minded, be fearless and do not be worried about the unknown.
2) Do Good Deeds
Karma is thought to be another element of luck and that they work in tandem. The dictionary defines karma as ‘destiny or fate, following as effect from cause’. Everything that happens to you, good and bad, follows the laws of karma. Karma is created through a combination of words, thoughts, and actions and everything we do creates a corresponding energy. If you show compassion and help others when they are suffering, this creates good karma. If you intentionally harm others, this creates bad karma. Practice kindness in your words and deeds and drawing good karma will also attract good luck.
3) Expect Good Things to Happen!
Are you the type of person who believes that the glass is half full, not half empty? This shows that you are an optimistic person. The laws of attraction are based on negative vs. positive thinking patterns. Staying positive all the time can be challenging but having a negative attitude is thought to bring about negative circumstances. If you expect that you will fail your exams, then maybe you won’t study as hard and your negative expectation will manifest in your life, perhaps affecting your career options. Expect that good things will happen to you, and they will. William Arthur Ward said, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” Tell yourself you really can and don’t let negativity take your luck.
4) Examine the Choices You Make
You can increase your prospects of lucky chances by making good choices. While luck involves an element of chance, being lucky is also a reflection of the choices we make. The smallest choices from who we choose to spend our time with to what we eat for breakfast can have a significant impact on the possibilities that flow. Whether a friend helps you land a great job or you eat a balanced breakfast, this can impact both your income and your health and has nothing to do with talent or accomplishment, per se. It has everything to do with the choices we make. The magic lies in making positive choices that unlock enormous possibilities, otherwise known as luck.
