The winter season in Puerto Vallarta is far from the cracked lips and alligator skin of north. Between the months of December and April, hundreds of humpback whales migrate from the frigid waters of the Arctic to breed and birth their babies in the Bay of Banderas. Spectacular displays of breaching whales can be seen as mothers teach their babies the techniques needed to survive the return trip to the North and as males compete for the romantic attention of the females. Boat excursions, offered by various tour companies in the area, head out every morning in search of the impressive whale shows and few return disappointed. At every point of the bay, hoards of whales shock viewers as they put on awe-inspiring displays and offer a multitude of kodak moments.
Closer to shore, another remarkable display that takes place during the winter months has been getting its fair share of attention. Kite-boarders from all over come to Vallarta in search of the perfect conditions to practice and perfect their pastime. The sport, which has gained much popularity in recent years, has been taking over a few beaches in the northern part of the bay. Spectators line the shores to witness the colossal tricks, spectacular stunts and even the occasional accident being performed by the various kiters. Those brave enough can also take advantage of the various private lessons available by the professionals in the area. Whether you choose to participate or simply observe the action, the unbelievable kiting displays are worth the while.
Puerto Vallarta certainly lives up to its reputation as the perfect wintertime escape. Its fabulous beaches, tropical climate, and impressive winter displays make for an incredible vacation experience that everyone will remember for years to come.
