Free Walking Tours in Puerto Vallarta

Table of Contents

If you are vacationing on a budget in Puerto Vallarta, you might want to save your funds for really special trips and activities like whale watching and the Marigalante Pirate show. Luckily, you will find plenty of free activities to enjoy in Puerto Vallarta! Here are a few of our favorite free walking tours in Puerto Vallarta:

Downtown Tour

Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am and 12 noon, and each Saturday at 9am, the Downtown Tour leaves from the Tourist Office (found on the town square) and winds through the downtown area. All are welcome to join the tour and learn about the history, architecture, and famous denizens of the city over the space of around two hours. We recommend that you bring water and wear comfortable shoes as it can get very hot!

Free Sculpture Tours

Gary Thompson leads the Galeria Pacifico sculpture tours from the “Millennium” sculpture every Tuesday morning at 9:30. Sometimes the sculptor of this piece, Sr. Fernando Baños (who is also known as Mathis Lidice), will kick start the tour by explaining the history of the “Millennium” sculpture before Mr Thompson leads you through all of the wonderful pieces found along the Malecon. This tour ends at Galeria Pacifico where you will have the chance to meet more artists. The tours run weekly during the high season (October to March), but it is advisable to call the gallery to check during the low season.

Los Muertos Beach

Los Muertos beach can be found just south of the bustling boardwalk, and is a must see! The pier and pelicans make for stunning photo opportunities, and there are many restaurants, cafes, and bars nearby. At Los Muertos beach you can spend a whole day lounging in the sun, swimming in the ocean, and making sandcastles. There are vendors about if you wish to shop, but this could be a 100% free day out for you and your family. Take a walk south from Los Muertos Beach along the coast until you find a great spot.

Isla Rio Cuale

A stroll across Rio Cuale Island has no cost, but it’s a lovely experience which promises relaxation and wonder in an idyllic setting. The John Houston monument should definitely be on your list of places to go if you plan to visit Rio Cuale, too. This magical island is surrounded on both sides by the Rio Cuale river, and can be reached via bridges to the mainland.

The Art Walk

The Art Walk is not so much a tour as it is an evening of socialization and art talk involving a large number of the galleries in downtown Puerto Vallarta. The Art Walk general runs from October to April and gives visitors a chance to meet artists, mingle with like-minded people, and snag a free glass of wine.

Don’t forget; Puerto Vallarta is a great budget destination, in any case, as your US and Canadian dollars will go a long way when exchanged for Mexican pesos!
