Table of Contents

Puerto Vallarta is a city “of” and “for” art lovers; the beautiful Boardwalk (Malecon) is filled to the brim with stunning bronze sculptures for every passer-by to enjoy as they stroll by and take in the sights of the Pacific Ocean and Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta Walking Tour of the Malecon

Fortunately for art aficionados of all levels of knowledge, the owner of Galeria Pacifico, Gary Thompson, offers a free Malecon Art Walk which will teach you more about the sculptures along the Malecon. The tour runs every Tuesday morning from Mid-November to Mid-April in the very heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta. No reservations are required to join this walking tour; just turn up promptly at the north end of the Malecon at 9:30am. The tour meets right beside the Millennium sculpture which can be found next to the Hotel Rosita near Diamonds International and McDonalds.

What to Expect

Typically speaking the 2 hour walking tour will be kicked off by artist Mathis Lidice who will speak to the group about his inspiration for this gigantic landmark sculpture. The walking tour will then continue on after around 15 minutes of chatting, questions, and photo-opportunities.

Each and every bronze sculpture inspires a conversation, especially when fascinating details about each artist is revealed. Such facts can be about their artistic background, the innovative techniques and inspirations for their works, aspects of their personal lives including political leanings, scandals, and love affairs… it could even be about how they got funding for the sculpture.

You are always encouraged to ask questions on this walking tour, and at least 5 minutes will be set aside for discussion after each piece that you see. The tour usually visits around fifteen or so statues and will generally concludes at Galeria Pacifico where talented sculptor Jim Demetro often makes himself available to talk with guests and explain the processes used in the making of such works. He also likes to discuss his own works which are called Dancers of Vallarta and Woman Washing Clothes.

Tips for enjoying the malecon walking tour in Puerto Vallarta. Here are a few things to consider before you participate:

  • Though the tour is free, it is suggested that anyone who takes part in the tour bring some along cash to tip the Papantla Flyers and sand sculpture artists that are seen along the Malecon.
  • Anyone unable to walk long distances may find this hard, although the malecon is suitable for wheelchairs.
  • While we encourage children to get interested in art early those who are particularly young may find the tour tiring after a while.

So, the next time you fancy diving into the culture of Puerto Vallarta you should join the free and easy Malecon Sculpture Walking Tour which will give you some behind-the-scenes info, too!
