Once again, the national holidays have arrived as well as a variety of events and celebrations that make all the country shout out loud “Viva Mexico!”.
Every year, September 15th and 16th are the official days to celebrate the Independence of Mexico. It was in the first hours of September 16th when the independence movement began to take shape in 1810, and this is why the festivities officially start since the 15th.
In 2019, we’ll have an independence weekend, as September 15th will be a Sunday. It is an ideal excuse to escape to Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa and enjoy the greatest national holiday in Puerto Vallarta.
Events to celebrate the national holidays in Puerto Vallarta
The national holidays are celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country and each city offers different activities and festivities.
This year, from Friday, September 13th to Monday, September 16th, Puerto Vallarta will fill with color and excitement with different memorial parades, art exhibitions, traditional dances, ceremonies and, of course, delicious Mexican food and mariachi music.

What would the national holidays be without a good Mexican party?
On September 15th, Garza Blanca’s ambiance will be painted of green, white and red (our national colors) to celebrate the Independence of Mexico with a big party. Live music and stations with snacks, ceviches, Mexican antojitos, tacos, salsas and desserts will be part of this great celebration that will take place in the main pool area. There will also be a handicraft market.

Charro Day Parade 2019
Charrería is one of the most entrenched traditions in the state of Jalisco and is called by many as “the national sport”. Its importance is such that in 2017 it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
September 14th is Charro Day and the streets of Puerto Vallarta will host a parade accompanied by drum music, in which charros on foot and riding horses will perform all kinds of acts to show their great talent.
Cry of Mexican Independence 2019
The Cry of Independence is probably one of the most anticipated Mexican traditions of the year. This act recalls the moment in which Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla – the father of the country – made the call to start the independence movement in 1810.
Every year, at 11 pm sharp, the municipal president of Puerto Vallarta goes out to the balcony of the Municipal Presidency to address all those gathered in the Plaza de Armas and give the Cry of Independence. It’s the most emotional moment of the whole celebration, where the main heroes of the country are mentioned, accompanied by many “Viva Mexico!”.
This national act ends with a fabulous fireworks show that can be admired from Puerto Vallarta’s boardwalk. Don’t miss it!
Mexico Independence Parade 2019
The military parade on September 16th is another great tradition that takes place in different cities of Mexico. Millions of Mexicans all over the country see it on the streets or gather around the tv with their families to watch every second of it.
In the case of Puerto Vallarta, our downtown main streets rejoice to receive our armed forces, firefighters, doctors and, once again, our beloved charros. The traditional route of the military parade goes from Parque Hidalgo to Plaza de Armas, passing through the boardwalk.
