History and chocolate in one

As you walk around Puerto Vallarta to get from shop to shop, you will learn about the local history of the town, which was once just a sleepy fishing village.  Discussions during the tour also explore the unique beginnings and evolution of chocolate, discussing how a delicacy enjoyed by indigenous tribespeople in Mexico ended up gaining in popularity across Europe to become one of the most favored types of sweets in the world.

Mexico and chocolate

Chocolate has been around in Mexico for nearly 4,000 years, and several different groups, including the Mayans and the Aztecs, were quite fond of the beans that come from the cacao tree.  The Mayans used them for medicinal purposes, while the Aztecs enjoyed them as the starring ingredient in a traditional ceremonial beverage. The modern word chocolate, in fact, was inspired by the Aztec word “xocoatl”, which is what they called the drink that they brewed from cacao beans.  The Mayans and Aztecs revered cacao beans as powerful and magical, using them in ancient rituals that were tied to events such as marriage, birth and death.

You will enjoy a mini-class at the end of the tour, which will allow you to roast and grind cacao beans, just as the ancient Aztecs did, in order to make the ancient beverage.  You will get to see for yourself if the drink the Spanish Conquistadors were so fond of is as amazing as they thought it was. If you are in the mood to shop, the tour also includes time to buy as many chocolate-themed treats as you can handle, from soaps and body lotions made with locally produced chocolate, to all sorts of mouthwatering confections.

Beginning October 18th, the Chocolate Walk will be available on Wednesdays at 10am and Fridays at 2pm.  You can learn more and book your tour online at PuertoVallartaWalkingTours.com.
