Best Mexican destinations for a spring vacation

Table of Contents

Mexico has an incredibly long list of fantastic destinations for a spring vacation. Almost no other country can compare with Mexico at this time of year. The dry season in most places falls between December and April, with areas such as Los Cabos, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta enjoying long spells of fantastic weather. The clear skies, constant sunshine, and warm climate help to showcase Mexico’s world-famous beaches and waters, which are home to an incredible array of sea life. So whether you want to put your feet up, head out to explore, or party the night away, you will find a place for you amongst Mexico’s destinations for a spring vacation.

Los Cabos

Cabo San Lucas is the home of spring break in Mexico. During these few weeks, the city hosts thousands of visitors searching for fun, warmth, and unique experiences. The place comes alive with fantastic energy around this time of the year.

Here you will find people making the most of the sunshine, with temperatures around 80°F most days and not a cloud in the sky, at the pool or relaxing next to it. But taking a boat trip is one of the essential experiences during a stay in Cabo. The Sea of Cortez is known as ‘the aquarium of the world’ and is a great place to spot sea lions, turtles, and colorful reef fish. One of the highlights for most guests is catching a glimpse of whale sharks, which leave around March until the next winter season.

When the sun sets, it’s time to grab a cold beer or a cocktail and enjoy the nightlife. Alongside the bustling bars, the area is known for its seafood tacos, which shouldn’t be missed before making your way downtown. Once you are there, whether you are out for a few drinks to unwind or an epic long night, there is something for you here.

Cancun

Cancun is another of Mexico’s most popular destinations for a spring vacation. The area attracts many visitors over Christmas and New Year, but spring is the best time to visit.

The iconic beaches are the main draw for most visitors, and Cancun has some of the best beaches for spring break. These include Playa Delfines and Costa Mujeres, which are picture-perfect, from the white sand beaches to the blue waters.

The weather is constantly fantastic, with seemingly endless clear skies, warm sunshine, and little chance of rain. It’s an ideal destination for spring break worshippers, who can expect temperatures of around 85°F. That also makes perfect conditions for heading out on day trips to explore the nearby jungle, cenotes, or ancient ruins, such as the famous heritage site of Chichen Itza.

Isla Mujeres

One of the best day trips from Cancun is to Isla Mujeres, which arguably has some of the best beaches in the world. Playa Norte can be found just a 15-minute ferry ride away and is well worth the trip. The shores here are also popular with turtles, who lay their eggs between May and October before hatching from July through to December. But spring visitors can still visit turtles at the island’s conservation center Tortugranja. Here, visitors can see, feed, and interact with turtles at all stages of development, along with other local marine life, like conches, horseshoe crabs, and urchins. The island is just eight kilometers long but packs a lot in, especially at Garrafon Natural Reef Park, with snorkeling, zip lining, and kayaking. The fantastic restaurants, such as Rooster or Ruben’s, are worth visiting before boarding the ferry to return to Cancun.

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is well known as a spring break beach destination that has something for everyone almost every day of the year. That makes it popular with families who enjoy the beach, water sports, wildlife spotting, and a friendly atmosphere. There’s also the great weather, which reaches around 85°F most days from around the end of March.

One of the main attractions for visitors is the surfing scene here. The waves in Puerto Vallarta are great all year round but are at their best when the north swells arrive between December and April. These offer good conditions for beginners without being intimidating, but also something to challenge more experienced surfers.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite in the Pacific Ocean, you will find a foodie paradise. Jalisco has a rich culinary history, seen from the fantastic produce in the many restaurants and street food stalls. Booking a spot on a food tour is one of the best ways to sample a taste of what makes the dining scene here so well-renowned.

Make sure to make time for a walk through the city streets, taking in the historic old town center and along the Malecon boardwalk to watch the sunset.

Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido’s popularity is constantly increasing, and it certainly deserves its place as one of Mexico’s must-visit destinations for a spring vacation. It’s where surfing, delicious food, and excellent nightlife meet to make for a world-class beach destination.

The resort town has become the surf capital of Mexico, with beaches such as Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Principal, and Playa Zicatela. But surfers aren’t the only thing you will spot here. You can also find rafting and paddleboarding activities. There are also numerous tours and experiences for seeing sea turtles and dolphins at different points in the year and humpback whales between November and March.

A trip to Oaxaca would only be complete by sampling some of Mexico’s best food and drink. Make sure to order a Tlayuda from one of the street food stalls and head to a bar to sip on some mezcal.
