Is it Safe To Travel To Mexico Right Now?

Table of Contents

If you are wondering if it is safe to travel to Mexico right now, the answer is yes. Mexico is a favorite tourist destination for travelers seeking a respite from the winter cold, but visitors travel here year-round whether to visit the stunning beaches, quaint towns, or the bustling Mexico City with all of its museums, culture, and history. As long as you are prepared and take into account the travel advisories and new COVID-19 pre-departure testing measures, Mexico is open and ready to welcome travelers.

Visitors to Mexico don’t need to present a COVID-19 test before boarding their outbound flights or quarantine once they arrive. The only coronavirus-related entry requirement was for travelers to fill out an online health declaration form and scan the QR code at the airport upon check-in for their outbound flight and again once they went through customs. As of January 1, 2022, Mexico officially discontinued this form. Now the only entry requirement is back to what it was pre-COVID. Visitors must fill out an Entry Immigration Form (FMM) and present it at customs. The border official will stamp the form and grant a stay for up to 180 days. This is called a Tourist Card. It is important to keep this card safe, as visitors need to present it at check-in for their inbound flight or pay the replacement fee to get another one.

The United States requires proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken a minimum of 24 hours prior to departing from Mexico.

Yes, hotels and resorts in Mexico have been open since July 1st, 2020. The Mexican government introduced a biweekly traffic light monitoring system to indicate the level of the pandemic, percentage of infections, and restrictions in each state. The stoplight system has four colors: red, orange, yellow, and green. Red indicates that the destination can only offer essential activities and hotel occupancy is capped at 25% and green means that all activities are permitted while taking appropriate precautions.

For the period from January 10th –23rd, 2022, none one of Mexico’s 32 states are in red status. Three states are designated orange (Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas); nineteen states are designated green (Campeche, Chiapas, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico City, Mexico State, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz); and ten states are in yellow (Aguascalientes, Baja California, Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Yucatán, and Zacatecas).

The traffic light updates for the state of Quintana Roo are divided into two regions – Southern Quintana Roo and Northern Quintana Roo. Both regions are currently in yellow status according to the latest update, which allows both essential and non-essential economic activities as well as mandates temperature checks, the use of a face mask, and use of antibacterial gel when in public spaces.

During your Stay

  • Upon arrival in Mexico, travelers face health screenings like temperature checks—Cancun’s airport has thermographic cameras that register travelers with fevers (you might not even notice they’re taking your temperature).
  • Wear a mask, avoid crowds, stay at least 6 feet from people who are not traveling with you, wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer, and watch for symptoms.
  • Check if the resort you are staying at offers on-site COVID-19 testing.

Before Traveling Home

covid test

Before traveling back to the United States or many other countries by air, passengers are required to take a COVID-19 test. For travelers to the US, the test must be taken no more than 24 hours before scheduled flight departures. Proof of a negative test result must be shown at the airport upon check-in. Keep a copy of your test results with you. Passengers who have recently recovered from COVID-19 and are no longer contagious can present documentation of their positive test result and a letter from a healthcare provider or public health official that states they have been cleared for travel in lieu of a negative test.

Travelers who have already been vaccinated are not exempt from the testing requirement.

Several hotels in Mexico offer on-site COVID testing. Villa del Palmar Cancun and Garza Blanca Cancun both offer on-site PCR and antigen testing for a discounted rate. For any guests who test positive while staying at either resorts, they will be able to extend their stay with a discounted rate for both all-inclusive and room only reservations.
